The Fold-Out Cardboard Shop Interior

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Architect Toby Horrocks and designer Kristian Aus have created this fold-out cardboard shop interior for the State of Design festival in Melbourne that is both architecture and object.

Five cardboard panels open out to form a desk, chair, shelves and lighting arrangement.

The panels can be flat-packed and are made from re-used and 100% recyclable cardboard.

‘(Bar)barian’ by No.1 Son & Esque

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Born of a meditation on authenticity, the recent collaboration between design studio No. 1 Son and the innovative glassmakers at Portland-based Esque Studio flirts with scale and fantasy for a collection of modern heirlooms.

The beautifully provocative collection is the upshot of both a collective desire to create meaningful objects, and No. 1 Son founder Travis Harvey’s carefully considered look at Miles Orvell’s book “The Real Thing: Imitation and Authenticity in American Culture.”

While the project involved months of discourse between Esque partners Justin Parker and Kovel and Harvey (who draws on design chops as head designer of Nike’s Pro Combat collection), the anachronistically savage items speak for themselves, standing out for their surprising mix of materials and overall symbolism.

‘Hi Panda’ by Ji-Ji

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

We are liking these cute figurines from Hi Panda, a clothing and lifestyle brand created by Chinese artist Ji-Ji and owned by LVMH’s Antoine Arnault.

With its focus on Chinese youth and “hip pop,” Hi Panda made its Western debut earlier this year at Palais de Tokyo and features different situations and incarnations.

Not to be confused with Be@rbrick, Hello Kitty or Bathing Ape, Hi Panda will participate at an exhibition at the Louis Vuitton Museum later this year. In the meantime, the elusive creatures can be spotted in a mini-exhibit at Harvey Nichols, the label’s exclusive European retailer, which has scooped up all the tees, totes and caps it can get its hands on, as well as Hi Panda’s more serious art ventures, including large-scale sculptures, paintings and silkscreens. It’s true, China is the next frontier in art-pop culture.

Ernesto Neto and ‘The New Décor’ At The Hayward Gallery

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

The Hayward Gallery presents ‘The New Décor’; an international survey of over 30 contemporary artists, including some of the leading sculptors of our time, who explore interior design as a means of engaging with changes in contemporary culture.

By reconfiguring and reinventing the familiar objects of our domestic life, these artists look beyond design and function to create provocative sculptures and installations.

Parallel to the New Decor, Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto has created a series of site specific installations in and around the Hayward Gallery, called ‘The Edges of the World’.

The exhibitions will run at the Hayward Gallery at the Southbank Centre in London until September 5th, 2010.
