Hunting And Collecting, Brussels

Monday, August 16th, 2010

If you are or will be in Brussels soon, what about checking out the store Hunting and Collecting, which is located on Rue des Chartreux.

The store, that opened last spring, clearly redefines what a store can be. The entirely refurbished space is beautiful, with very high ceilings and an open feel. One of the most interesting features in the store is the changing rooms area, which has a “cabin in the woods feel”.

The selection of labels is highly interesting, from funky Barcelona and Tokyo designers to modernist American and Scandinavian brands.

Highlights for next season include Silent by Damir Doma, Dana Lee, Maria Luisa, White Mountaineering, Sandrina Fasoli and Christopher Shannon.

Selfridges Windows by Kyle Bean

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Brighton based sculptor and model maker Kyle Bean has installed sculptures in five windows of the London Selfridges department store that show striking examples of the law of conservation of mass.

For a little science refresh, the law states that mass in a closed system will remain constant over time or in balance. Each of the installations consists of two like objects suspended from a scale. The objects have either been altered or deconstructed to show that the difference in form doesn’t translate to a difference in weight.

While cleverly illustrating a scientific principle, they also offer an underlying comment on consumerism. The installations are on view through September 1st 2010.

ACNE Studio Opening, London

Monday, July 26th, 2010

ACNE have spread design confidence and business acumen over the four floors of a Georgian house in the heart of Mayfair, London.

Conceived as a house more than a megastore, the space meets the promise and the moment you step in, you’re into a world where everything is balanced. Feels contemporary, but not cold. Feels intimate, but still works the purpose of being a shop. Also, the store design pays tribute to the building’s former role as an art gallery, displaying works by Helmut Lang, Jeremiah Goodman and Katerina Jebb.

The highlights? A piano for live music on weekends and a large-scale Helmut Lang sculpture.

Jhonny Johansson, Mikael Schiller and Thomas Persson prove – once again – their vision was right, other than giving us a new very good reason to regularly walk down to Dover Street.

This is a definite stop for those of you in London soon. Check out the security…

‘La Pharmacie’, Colette

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Recently Parisian destination shop Colette opened a concept shop within the store called La Pharmacie.

La Pharmacie is an extremely sterile space that very well represents a classic European pharmacy, and actually reminds us a lot of Damien Hirst’s eery medicine cabinet art.

An intimate, pure, soothing space for women and men that combines makeup, perfumes, balms for skin and hair care and a “cabinet of jewelry” - stop by if you visit one of Paris’s legendary concept store.
